"Member Engagement – What it means and how to make it work"
A complimentary "Morning Workshop"
Wednesday, 12th October 2011 from 08.30AM – 11.15AM
CPD: 2hrs
Very often member engagement is viewed as an optional extra rather than an integral part of pension scheme management. It should be a strategic aspect of any pension initiative. It's one of the key responsibilities of pension schemes but is one of the hardest responsibilities to understand and improve.
There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to encourage engagement and what works for some is completely wrong for others. In this respect having an understanding of user experience and the psychology of engagement is incredibly useful.
This workshop will guide you through employee and member engagement, helping you understand the strategies and risks involved.
Why is the subject matter important?
Successful member engagement is a pre-requisite for employers taking part in the greatest upheaval in UK Pensions ever, by seeking to transfer some or all of the costs of living longer to their workforce. This session looks at the key elements of modern member engagement strategies and the use of innovative tools to connect with "Gen Y" in the competition for fresh talent in the workplace. Simply transferring the longevity risk to existing employees isn't enough, so we will examine actual case studies where carefully planned and resourced communication strategies have enabled a successful transition.
Why is it important right now?
It's vitally important now, because the steps taken by government and employers to address recent economic turbulence and the cost of living longer are putting increasing pressure on the bond between employees and their employer. With "auto-enrolment" in pension schemes due to be phased in from 2012, planning should already have started as to what the impact will be on current strategies.
Who will benefit most from attending this event?
This session is a "must" for those charged with helping their organisations to transfer the longevity risk from their pension schemes without damaging employee trust AND develop a strategy for managing the new labour market where older employees may be forced to work longer and there is an increasing shortage of appropriately skilled younger replacements. FDs, Pensions Managers, Chairs of Trustees and HR Managers will find the content invaluable
What sort of questions will the session deal with?
- What exactly do we mean by employee and member engagement?
- Why is it such an important corporate issue?
- Why does poor member understanding about investments and DC in particular cause such a turn off and increased mistrust?
- How important is the communication risk for a pension scheme compared to operational and process risks?
- When is an operational or process issue really a communications matter and what remedies are available to enhance the "customer experience?"
- What engagement strategies are working well in practice?
- What additional benefits are there for an employer sponsor willing to invest in an employee engagement strategy for the 21st Century?
- What are the additional risks in the longer term to the employer and trustees failing to address engagement issues?

Knowledge is power, but only if applied
Our complimentary training sessions are not just provided to increase knowledge and understanding in a theoretical context; they are also designed to act as a platform for positive change. By focusing on the actions that can be taken we can support you in achieving the objectives you have for your pension scheme, whatever they may be. Follow-up meetings may be offered on a complimentary basis to help apply the knowledge gained at the seminar, helping to turn the class-room theory into scheme-specific practice. This supportive approach will enable you to derive lasting value from attending.
Format for the Session
To provide maximum value to attendees we will be keeping the session small enough to be run as an interactive workshop, so numbers will be limited and allocated on a first-come, first served basis to those that qualify to attend. Attendance is completely without cost or obligation.
We therefore expect the session to be filled quickly so to avoid disappointment do please request a place by applying through this site using your corporate E Mail address – just go to "register" towards the top of this page to quickly and easily book your place.
